COON RAPIDS, Minn. -- The Coon Rapids Senior Center is celebrating a big milestone.
It was 40 years ago that the Super Senior Club formed in the basement of a church and started what is now known as the Coon Rapids Senior Center. Last year, there were 33,000 visits to the senior center. In addition to special events, speakers and trips, 32 groups meet on a regular basis.
"We're excited about this anniversary," says senior services program specialist Kris Niebler. "Since that time, the senior center has met in a fire station, at the family services building on Coon Rapids Boulevard and then, in 1996, we moved to the current location here at city hall and we are just blessed and fortunate to have the city's support and also the support of 400 volunteers every year."
The seniors celebrated the 40th anniversary August 14 with a program, music and root beer floats.
The senior center programs are open to anyone 55 years of age or older.
