Candidates for City Offices
Any qualified voter may be a candidate for public office in the City of Coon Rapids by filing an Affidavit of Candidacy with the City Clerk and paying a $10 filing fee. For Ward positions, you must reside within the boundaries of the designated ward. The Mayor is elected city-wide. Candidate names appear on ballots without party designation in municipal elections. The term of office for Mayor and Councilmembers is four years. Municipal elections are held in even years.
Voting Equipment
State-of-the-art vote counting equipment is used by voters in Coon Rapids. The ACCU-VOTE ballot processing unit allows voters to record their choices on a paper ballot in the proper mark-sense area by coloring in an oval with a special marking pen. Total vote results are electronically tallied immediately after the polls close. The system allows voters to review their final decisions on paper before casting their ballot. If a ballot has been improperly completed, the ACCU-VOTE unit immediately returns the ballot to the voter for correction. In 2006 the City obtained AutoMARK™ Voter Assist Terminals which will allow a person with disabilities to mark a ballot privately and independently. One of these machines will be located in each precinct. Ballot choices and instructions are displayed in large text print on the touch screen monitor, as well as read by the audio system. Voters enter their selections by touching buttons on the screen, pressing keys on the keypad, or using an ADA device. The AutoMARK™ marks the ballot with the voter’s selections and returns the ballot which is then submitted into the AccuVote tabulating machine.
