Canine Division
The Coon Rapids Police Department was one of the first departments in Minnesota to establish a canine unit.
Our current canine handler is: Officer McDonough, and he has a male German Shepherd.
The Coon Rapids Police Canine Unit has trained to the standards of the United States Police Canine Association. Current and past canine teams received numerous commendations and honors from the USPCA. Canine teams are trained in criminal apprehension, officer protection, tracking, building search, article search and narcotics detection. Our canine unit participates in annual certification tests and public demonstrations.
Officer McDonough has been with the department since July 1990, and has been a canine handler since June 1994.
