Coon Rapids Public Utilities (Water &
Sewer)
763-767-6462
|
The Utility Division operates and maintains 24
groundwater wells which pump more than 3 billion gallons of water
annually. Over 31,000
customers are served by 290.7 miles of water main, two water treatment
plants (which remove iron & manganese), three elevated storage
tanks, and two ground storage reservoirs.
A total of 263 miles of sewer main carries wastewater from homes
and businesses to 17 sanitary sewer lift stations located throughout the
city. Funding for utility operations comes from fees charged to users.
It's the law! Don’t Dig Until You Call Gopher State One Call to mark all underground installations on your property.

Water Quality
The filtration plants remove iron and manganese and
adds chlorine and fluoride to provide quality water. This filtration
process does not soften the water. Water hardness averages between 16
and 18 grains, which users can lower by using a private water-softening
system.
Emergency Repairs
The Utility Division has someone on call 24 hours a
day for any water or sewer emergency. If you are experiencing a
sewer backup in your home, CALL US FIRST!
You may be able to avoid an unnecessary service call from a drain
company (and charge) if the problem is in the City's main line.
During normal business hours (7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.), call 763-767-6462.
At any other time call 763-427-1212 and ask for the Coon Rapids Utility
on call person and they will be dispatched to your home to analyze the
problem.
Repairs and Maintenance
Water meters are maintained by the City.
Plumbing valves, fittings and the service line to the watermain are the
sole responsibility of the property owner. Keep the area around
your water meter clear and accessible for ease of maintenance and
reading. If you have a leaky water meter or it is not working
properly, please call Utility Billing at 763-767-6438 to schedule an
appointment. Curb stops, which isolate a service line from the
main line out in the street should be located and be "at grade"
for emergency shut offs. Per City Code, use of electric welders
for thawing of frozen water lines is prohibited.
Sewer Information
The Utility Division maintains 16 sewer lift stations
throughout the City. Sewer mains carry wastewater, by gravity, to
these lift stations where the wastewater is collected then "lifted
or pumped" into larger sewer lines. DO NOT pour kitchen
grease of any kind down your drain or flush any type of hygiene product
into the sewer lines even if it says "flushable". This
can and will cause sewer backups! Another cause of backups are
roots. If you have your service line cleaned by a drain contractor
and roots have been pushed into the main sewer line, call Public Works
at 763-767-6462 (or After Hours Emergency at 763-427-1212). These service roots will cause a problem in the
mainline and a backup could occur.
