The Public Works Department employs 50 full-time and
numerous seasonal employees. Divisions of the Public Works
Department include:

Recycling |
The Recycling Division is actively involved in
recycling as mandated by the State’s Select Committee on Recycling
& Environment (SCORE). The recycling center
is at 1831 111th Ave. NW and accepts newspapers, magazines, junk
mail, glass and plastic bottles, metal cans, plastic bags, scrap
metal, waste oil and filters, antifreeze, wet cell and
rechargeable batteries, corrugated cardboard, telephone books,
hard cover books, styrofoam, plastic 1-6, and pop/beer cases.

Parks |
The Parks Division is responsible for construction, operation and maintenance of
Coon Rapids park facilities. The department installs and removes park equipment, makes repairs, mows grass, trims around fences and picks up litter to keep
our parks beautiful.

Forestry |
The City Forester helps maintain a
healthy urban forest by implementing a shade tree disease program,
trimming boulevard trees and removing hazardous trees. The Forestry
Department also promotes Arbor Day, plants trees in parks and replacement boulevard trees, and
answers questions the public has about care of trees. For many
years, the City has received the Tree
City U.S.A. award in recognition
of our strong commitment to the preservation of the urban forest.

Cook Memorial
Ice Arena |
Cook Ice Arena hosts CRAA Youth
Hockey and Coon Rapids High School hockey programs as well as a "Learn
to Skate" School. Call
763-421-5035 for rental, figure and open skating and hockey information.
The City also owns a rink at the Quad Arena - Schwan’s Super Rink in
Blaine. Call 763-785-3687 for information.

Utilities |
The Utility
Division operates the municipal water,
sanitary sewer and storm sewer
systems. City water is provided
through an extensive system of wells, water towers, reservoirs, pumping
facilities and two iron/manganese removal treatment plants to ensure
that the water in the City is safe. Waste water flows through
pipes under the streets which convey it to a metropolitan treatment
plant.

Streets |
City streets are patched, swept and seal coated by the
Street Division. Streets are cleared of ice and snow and slippery areas
are salted and sanded. Public sidewalks are repaired and plowed clear of
snow. Storm water is carried off the streets through a complicated
system of inlets, pipes, ditches and detention ponds. Traffic
signals, stop signs and street lights are also maintained.

Vehicle
Maintenance |
Construction equipment, trucks and City
vehicles necessary for maintenance of the infrastructure system are
serviced by the Maintenance Division at the Public Works garage.
Maintenance workers perform preventative maintenance and repairs to maximize
the life value of City-owned vehicles and
equipment.

Engineering
|
New streets, sidewalks, water mains, sanitary sewers
and storm drain infrastructure are designed and construction supervised
by the Engineering Division.
