Fire Department Explorers (associated with the Boy Scouts of America) is a program designed for males and females ages 14-20 who have completed 8th grade.
The ideal participant would have an interest in firefighting and emergency medical services as a future career. Explorers train with Coon Rapids firefighters to learn about various skills in the areas of fire suppression, first response (medical training) and rescue operations.
The program helps to build maturity and enhance the self-confidence of the members involved. We also focus heavily on communication, problem-solving and team-building skills.
What to Expect for Training
Members in the program can expect to participate in two Saturday morning trainings per month for approximately three hours each time. We typically meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month, with some exceptions for holidays. Training usually takes place at one of our three fire stations, with an occasional off-site activity or competition.
There are occasionally extra training sessions and other City-sponsored events to participate in as well.
The program runs for one year, starting in September and ending in August.
