Building Permits - Residential

When don't I need a permit?

A permit is not required for projects such as:

  • replacing flooring (carpet, tile, vinyl, wood, etc.)
  • painting interior or exterior surfaces
  • replacing cabinets (not changing the layout)
  • counter tops (a plumbing permit is required if countertop includes a sink)
  • planting grass, flowers, shrubs, trees
  • installing a mailbox (must meet post office regulations)
  • installing gutters

Please read our handout for information when a permit is required (PDF).

When in doubt, please call Building Inspections to discuss your project.
