City of Anoka Scaring Up Halloween Fun

More than 20 Halloween themed events have been taking place in Anoka in October. For the past 98 years, the city has been host to hauntingly fun entertainment as it defends its title of “Halloween Capital of the World.”

“A young man in Anoka named Harold Blair, he was a boy scout, he brought a proclamation to congress in Washington DC they read it and named Anoka the ‘Halloween Capital of the World’ but you have to defend that at all times,” said Anoka Halloween President Ron Nordin.

The organization’s history of Anoka Halloween says the proclamation passed in 1937. Since then, the events have grown in number and size.

“We make up new events every year, try to get more people involved so there’s something for everyone to do,” said Volunteer Olivia Minor.

On October 20, a pumpkin carving competition included well over 100 participants. The annual “Light Up the Night” parade on Main Street entertained crowds bundled in blankets for an hour with uniquely illuminated floats.
