The next step in construction of the Hanson Boulevard overpass calls for a complete closure of Hanson in both directions for several months.
Hanson Boulevard is scheduled to close Monday, March 4th and is expected to reopen by the end of October 2019. The closure is between 106th Avenue NW and 108th Lane NW. The designated detour routes include Coon Rapids Boulevard, Crooked Lake Boulevard and Northdale Boulevard.
While closed, crews will construct a bridge over the railroad tracks, a vehicle underpass connecting 108th Lane NW (west of Hanson Boulevard) to 108th Avenue NW (east of Hanson Boulevard) and a pedestrian underpass with a connection south of the railroad tracks at 108th Avenue NW. Work first began in this area in 2018, when the general contractor relocated public and private utilities. Storm water retention ponds were built and new sewer and water lines were installed.
The project, which costs approximately $25 million, is paid in part by state funding. Other partnership funding includes: CTIB (Counties Transit Improvement Board, 30%), Anoka County (10%), the City of Coon Rapids (5%) and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (5%). The bridge overpass structure will separate train, vehicle and pedestrian traffic. This grade separation will enhance public safety by creating a safer roadway and improve emergency response times by eliminating traffic backups caused by the many trains that travel in the area.
