Despite Snow, Some Thinking About Gardening Season

A few days before an April snowstorm blanketed Coon Rapids in snow, close to 150 people were learning how to prepare for the growing season.

The 13th annual Home Landscaping and Garden Fair returned to the Bunker Hills Activity Center on April 6th with more than a dozen classes for those with and without a green thumb.

“I think one of the first things people say when they walk in and see the vendors is ‘Oh it smells so good and I can’t wait to into the garden.’ People are ready, especially after the long vortex winter,” said Lynn Hagen with the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener Program.

One class featured floral design techniques and another taught tree pruning. Hagen says you don’t have to be an experienced gardener or have a large yard to participate.

“We have people who live in town houses that will grow vegetables in pots and containers so it’s not necessarily geared toward people with big large gardens, it can be really small gardens,” Hagen said.

The next big Anoka County Master Gardener event is a plant sale. It will be held May 14th and 15th at the Anoka Armory.
