For the first time, the Broadway musical “Bright Star” is being performed by a professional cast in Minnesota. They’re taking center stage at Lyric Arts Main Street Stage, a theater with more than two decades of history in Anoka.
The musical, written by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell is based on a true story. The audience is first introduced to 16-year-old Alice Murphy in Asheville, North Carolina in the 1920’s.
“She’s very confidant, very smart, very flirty and very ambitious. She knows what she wants and she wants the world,” said Katie Rozanas, the actor playing Murphy.
But the next 22 years hold serious challenges and hardship. An encounter with a soldier returning from the Second World War causes her to reflect on her own past.
“When we meet here as a 38-year-old you see how those have affected who she’s become, a little bit cold, a little bit jaded but still very strong,” said Rozanas.
Fans of Bluegrass music will enjoy original scores performed on-stage with the actors.
Bright Star opens September 6th and continues through September 29th. Tickets can be purchased online at www.lyricarts.org.
