Local Church Offers Free Burial Service for Cremated Remains

For the second year, the Church of the Epiphany has provided a final resting place for cremated remains in one of its cemeteries for free. After a November 5th funeral service in Coon Rapids seven names will be added to a marker stone near 37 names added the year before.

“It's a wonderful thing to have a place to come and remember. It's good that the dead not be forgotten. When we have a place, a location, their name is remembered and we're able to come and gather near them. There's a presence associated with our beloved dead. To be near them is a holy thing,” said Father Thomas Dufner, a pastor at the Church of the Epiphany.

Only cremated remains held for at least 18 months are accepted and a cremation certificate is required. Both Catholics and non-Catholics can participate.

Although there is no charge for the service or burial a nominal fee is charged to have a loved one’s name added to a marker stone. Father Dufner says the church will cast a “wider net” next year before next year’s funeral in November 2020.
