Hundreds of Coats Donated to Kids in Need

Coon Rapids and Minneapolis firefighters teamed up on November19th to make sure kids at the Head Start facility have a warm winter coat.

“Operation Warm” has provided coats to more than two million children in the U.S. but this was the first year for the event in Coon Rapids.

Close to 370 coats were given to grade school children from a low-income or special needs family.

“It’s important for us to show that we care about them and give them the resources that they may need. We have family service workers that are assigned to each family throughout the program so if there's other needs besides a winter coat or something we have the resources to be able to direct them in the right direction,” said Jennifer DeMars with the Anoka County Community Action Program.

Firefighters and 15 volunteers with the Business Impact Group helped the children find the right coat.

“Firefighters, we love to give back to the community. This is a great community that we live in. We got the support of the mayor, city council and staff and it's just part of what we do,” said Fire Inspector Nick House.

Half of a $10,000 donation from the Big Impact Group paid for all the coats given away at the November event.
