Candidate Filing May 19 - June 2
In conjunction with the state general election, Coon Rapids will hold its municipal election November 3, 2020. Coon Rapids voters will elect Councilmembers in Ward 1, 2, 4, and a Councilmember At Large during the November general election. Terms for these council positions are four years beginning January 1, 2021 and ending December 31, 2024.
Anyone interested in running for office must file an Affidavit of Candidacy and pay a $10 filing fee with the City Clerk’s office.
Candidate filing materials and additional information about the positions are available on the City website. This packet, along with a $10 filing fee is required. You can submit the materials via email and you can call City Hall at 763-755-2880 to pay your $10 filing fee by credit card.
The first day to file an Affidavit of Candidacy is May 19 and the last day to file is June 2. The deadline to withdraw an Affidavit of Candidacy is 5 p.m. on June 4, 2020.
To file for office, an individual must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 21 years of age upon assuming office
- Reside within the ward for at least 30 days before the general election
- Eligible to vote (citizen of U.S., residence in MN for 20 days, not convicted of a felony without having civil rights restored, not under guardianship where person has not retained the right to vote, not found by a court to be legally incompetent to vote)
- Not filed for the same or any other office at the upcoming primary or general election
