Business Spotlight - Kids' Hair

Haircut appointments used to be on the list of potentially scary experiences for a child… Kids’ Hair is here to cut all the intimidation out. When Earl and Suzanne Mollerud’s three sons were young boys, they felt the pressure and stress that came with getting family haircuts. Their family brought a big, energetic presence with them into any quiet salon that left some stylists apprehensive to add them to their schedule. These stressful visits inspired the Molleruds to start a salon where kids feel welcome and comfortable.

The first Kids’ Hair location opened in Edina in 1992. It gave parents a safe place to feel at ease lining up the family for haircuts. No matter what emotions the kids are bringing in with them, the stylists are happily up to the challenge. Since the original location in Edina opened, Kids’ Hair has transferred ownership and grown to 12 locations. The most recent being in the Riverdale Shopping Center in Coon Rapids, which opened in 2012.

From a child’s perspective, Kids’ Hair is designed specifically for them. The chairs are child-size and come with booster seat attachments to comfortably and safely sit any youngster, even babies and toddlers. If a child is nervous, Kids’ Hair allows them to pick a toy from the “fidget basket” filled with fidget spinners and other hand-held toys to keep their nerves at ease. Kids don’t need to worry about straining their neck sitting in a chair while a stylist washes their hair, Kids’ Hair allows the child to fully recline and relax. TVs are set up at each hair cutting station to ensure the child doesn’t squirm out of the chair from boredom.

Fun, comfortable and safe is what Kids’ Hair is all about. This salon created just for kids knows that each child has different needs. A partnership with Fraser provides their stylists with the proper training to work with any children that may have sensory issues or autism. Some days, that means a child simply is not comfortable wearing a cape or maybe they are afraid to sit in the chair… Kids’ Hair stylists have come up with creative strategies to accommodate very unique requests.

Kids’ Hair follows the COVID-19 guidelines from the Minnesota Board of Cosmetology and the MN Department of Health. The salon is operating at 50% capacity, styling stations are 6+ feet apart, and masks are required for stylists and any guests 5 years or older.

Families are invited to get on the schedule for back-to-school haircuts by calling 763-231-6775 or book an appointment online at
