Bunker Beach Waterpark Set to Open June 5

Some new improvements will greet visitors when they return to Bunker Beach this summer.

"This has been a great project," said Mike Gamache, Anoka County Commissioner who has closely followed the renovations on the state’s largest outdoor waterpark.

In a rush of activity, several contractors are putting the finishing touches on a whole host of improvements at Bunker Beach, before the opening day in June.

"They're laying the final layer of plaster on the floor of the wave pool," said Jeff Perry, the Anoka County Parks Director overseeing the improvements.

The wave pool is at the center of a $6.5 million dollar renovation project which began last summer, when Anoka County closed the waterpark due to the pandemic. Behind the headwall of the wave pool they have installed four new 150- horsepower motors, which will create the waves.

"It's more energy efficient,” Perry said. “It will generate eight different styles of waves that range from two to three feet tall, and will really add some excitement to Bunker Beach Water Park."

Commissioner Gamache noted that another change is in the water.

"It's been 30 years, you would jump in, maybe in June it might be a little cool, but now it's going to be heated,” Gamache said. “And that's going to help us on days that are not as nice as 80 or 90 degree days that we have in the summer where it really packs people in."

Commissioner Gamache and parks director Perry toured the new features at the waterpark. According to Perry, parents will be pleased to make use of the newly-constructed family restroom.

"That has four family restrooms, a space for lactation functions, as well as a tube rental area."

Next to the wave pool is a new lagoon.

"We also added a three thousand square foot children's lagoon with eight different spray features."

High above the lagoon, a bucket stands poised and ready for fun.

"That is the mega-soaker and that, believe it or not holds 200 gallons of water,” Perry said. “And it will slowly tip and the water will be diffused and splash on into the play area."

The waterpark pool capacity, which includes all of the various pools, can accommodate 2500 people.

"Everybody's excited to see this reopen and see people and kids jumping in the pool again," said Gamache.

And with Governor Walz lifting restrictions on outdoor gatherings, Perry noted, "We will be opening at full capacity with no restrictions."

The grand reopening of Bunker Beach is set for Saturday, June 5th at 11 a.m. and the outdoor water park will be open daily, through Labor Day. Also, they are still busy hiring for various summer positions, including lifeguards. For more information, click here.
