Renovation Project Complete at Bunker Beach

With the sound of ocean waves in the background, the Anoka County Board cut the ribbon on the new and improved wave pool along the rebirth of Bunker Beach Water Park on Tuesday.

"It will offer nine different wave options,” said Anoka County Parks Director, Jeff Perry. “It's powered by four 150-horse power, energy-efficient motors."

Work on the capital improvements began last year since the pandemic had shut down the water park operations. The $6.5 million dollar project was the result of grants and creative financing by Anoka County.

Commissioner Matt Look waded into the wave pool, which is now heated to a comfortable 80 degrees.

"It's hard to compare 80 degree to what it was previously,” said Commissioner Look. “I remember taking my boys here, stepping in the water and just about dying of hypothermia, so it wasn't that bad, at the 80, but it's still cooler than the ambient air, and especially when we open here, (on Saturday) it will be 97 degrees, it will be a significantly cooler feeling. But I think ultimately it'll be refreshing for everyone."

The new children's lagoon features 3,000 square feet of fun for the little ones. And parents who have younger children will appreciate the new family restroom building which features four spacious, family restrooms. The building also has a tube rental area and lockers for public use.

Commissioner Look said what many were thinking, "We're just excited for the folks who are going to be able to take advantage of it this summer."

Bunker Beach opens to the public at 11a.m. on Saturday, June 5. For more information, click here .
