Lions Coon Creek Park on Display at First Summer Meeting

Tuesday night, the city held an ice cream social, to the relief of many battling the heat, at one of the most popular parks in Coon Rapids.  Mayor Jerry Koch spoke to neighbors at the kickoff of the Summer in the City Neighborhood Meetings at Lions Coon Creek Park.

"It's so fun to be back out in the park and see the residents come back out to the park, see the staff come out here,” said Mayor Koch. “It's like 2020 never happened."

Lions Coon Creek Park was closed to the public for the 2019 season, and completely renovated with funds paid for by the 2013 park bond referendum. The city also got help from the Coon Rapids Lions Club, which donated over $50,000 dollars to cover some of the costs.

"Whenever I'm in the garden working, volunteering, just here in the park, people come here, they love this park, said Marcia Guthrie with the Coon Rapids Lions Club. “They come from other cities, they love this park."

Lions Coon Creek Park has the largest play structure of all the parks in the city, ADA accessible, and recommended for children up to age 12.

Mollie, age 9, enjoyed playing on the playground, with her dad by her side. "My favorite part is probably doing the monkey bars and the zip line."

The park has four large picnic shelters which provide plenty of shade on hot days. Shelters number one and two require reservations - for a fee. And shelters number three and four are first come, first serve.

Among the host of new features: there’s a sand volleyball court and full-length basketball court, which attracts a lot of attention from the youth. And trails for walkers and cyclists, which run past Coon Creek.

"Our parks are very popular and our trail system is second to none,” said Ryan Gunderson, the recreation supervisor. “That's one of the first comments we get is about how great our trail system is."

Mayor Koch added, "I think that we just hit it out of the park with this.  If you have not been down here, you have to come down and look at this park.  It's terrific, kids love it, and it's always busy."
