Safety Camp Returns After Four Year Hiatus

After a four year hiatus, Safety Camp is back in Coon Rapids and teaching important lessons that will last a lifetime. For two days, fourth and fifth graders gathered at the Coon Rapids Ice Center to learn and practice, key skills to protect themselves from harm, and be safe, says camp counselor and fire inspector, Nick House.

"We took them through a safe escape house,” House said. “So we practice their safe escape plan. We talked about us smoke detectors, co detectors, making sure that their house is safe for them to sleep in and and live in."

Brand new this year was a session on Poison Control, and another safety camp first, how to use social media safely.

"As the world changes and as times change, we just want to make sure that we're up to date on everything that we're teaching the kids," House said.

By practicing good skills, alongside police officers and firefighters, the safety campers can greatly reduce the chance of injury and accidents.

"We just really want to bring back that the safety aspect and then help them to think outside the box and really figure things out," House said.

Safety Camp will return in the summer of 2024. Learn more about Safety Camp here.
