The program provides tools to businesses that are often only available to Fortune 500 companies. Forty hours of customized research is offered to businesses to help connect them with four key areas: strategic market research, geographic information systems, search engine optimization and social media marketing. Data and information in these areas can help identify market trends, potential competitors, enhance marketing efforts and help business executives make informed decisions on core strategies that will help the business.

The program also offers monthly roundtable discussions featuring CEOs of local businesses who have experienced significant growth. Speakers are also often brought in to discuss specific topics as well. Learn more here.

Mercy Hospital Expansion

Mercy Hospital is expanding again at its campus in Coon Rapids. As part of a long-term strategic effort, the facility is adding a two-story building for additional surgery space, a new main entrance and a 329-space, three-level parking deck. As part of its “One Hospital, Two Campuses” long-range plan, the facility is merging the operations of Mercy Hospital and Unity Hospital in Fridley. Starting in 2017, the two hospitals will operate as one and share the single name Mercy Hospital. The Fridley location will be known as Mercy Hospital - Unity Campus.

Riverdale/Northstar TOD

Proposed Development Near Northstar Rail Station

Plans are in the works to create a new residential development next to the Northstar Commuter Rail station on Northdale Boulevard (behind Target) on land owned by the Anoka County Regional Rail Authority. Minneapolis-based Sherman Associates proposes a four-story 176-unit market rate apartment building, a four-story 63-unit mixed-income apartment building and a small retail component. The apartments are expected to include many amenities, including a dog run, playground equipment, underground parking, walking paths, and improved access to the transit station. The market rate units would have rents between $1,200 and $1,750 per month and the affordable units would have rents between $800 and $1,200 per month. The apartments would be oriented toward empty-nesters, professionals, and other area households, particularly those who use the Northstar commuter rail. The 48 affordable apartments would be restricted to households earning 60% of the median income, which translates to over $50,000 for a family of four. Including the affordable apartments in the overall project was critical to attracting funding sources to construct this contemporary project with a high-level of amenity.

Coon Rapids Service

Business Spotlight - Coon Rapids Service Stays in the Family

In 1980, Chuck Szaflarski and Steve Warndahl combined their knowledge and expertise in auto repair and opened Coon Rapids Service after renovating a boarded up gas station located at 2600 Coon Rapids Boulevard NW.

Chuck’s son, Steven (Spike) grew up in the garage. “It was my daycare and vacation spot,” Steven says.

Warndahl retired and Chuck and Steven became business partners in 2009, when Steven purchased a portion of the company. Chuck later retired in 2014 and Steven took over as owner expanding upon what his father had established over the last 34 years, focusing on customer service and reliable repairs.

“We’re small enough where when you walk in we know your name. We’re really about giving fantastic service that some of the bigger stores can’t necessarily compete with. We are there truly to service people’s vehicles and meet their needs,” Szaflarski says.

Moving forward, Szaflarski hopes to continue to build the business by focusing on the company’s mission; ensuring that clients’ vehicles are safe and dependable.
Outside the company, Szaflarski wants to give back to the community he grew up in.
“I would love to see a non-profit that I’m able to set up with the profits from our business. Something bigger then ourselves, a way to provide services to those who need vehicle repairs.”
