Bridge Closure: Westbound Main Street (County Rd 14)
The westbound lanes of the land bridge on Main St./County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 14 between Coon Creek and Coon Creek Blvd./CSAH 18 in Coon Rapids has been closed due to the structural failure of a bridge span. The emergency closure affects westbound traffic only.
Highway Department engineers, as well as a consulting bridge engineer, determined that while a complete failure of the bridge span is not imminent, closure of the westbound lanes was necessary in the interest of public safety.
The detour is Hanson Blvd./CSAH 78, to Bunker Lake Blvd./CSAH 116, to Coon Creek Blvd./CSAH 18 to Main St./CSAH 14.
A land bridge is a structure built over a bog or other soft soil. In order to confirm the exact nature of the structural failure, an area on the north side of the bridge is being excavated to give engineers access to the underside of the bridge slab. Repair work is expected to begin immediately.
Currently, there is no estimate of when the bridge will reopen. Motorists are encouraged to check for updates at http://www.anokacounty.us/307/Highway-Department or follow @AnokaCountyHwy on Twitter.
