Fall Street Sweeping Begins
Fall street sweeping begins this week! You will see sweepers out for about the next month, cleaning up all areas of the city.
We need your help too! Please make sure you don't have hockey nets, basketball hoops and other items in the street (this is against City Code). Also, please do not blow your leaves into the street (also against City Code). We sweep the streets to make sure we are collecting leaves and debris that can clog storm drains and pollute our lakes and rivers.
Here are some other tips from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency as it relates to fall cleanup:
- Never blow or rake leaves into the stormwater drain. The leaves decompose and produce harmful levels of polluting nutrients that end up in our waterways, including lakes and rivers.
- Don’t blow or rake leaves into the street for the street sweepers to collect. The next windy or rainy day will send those leaves into the stormwater system. Instead, rake up the leaves and grass on your block and turn them into mulch or compost, take them to a green waste recycling facility or, if you have one, put them in your green waste bin.
The accumulation of leaves in our waterways leads to excessive nutrient loads. We can all play our part to collect and reuse or recycle the leaves from our blocks and street to help keep our waterways healthy.
