Firefighters spray water on a large pile of garbage in the middle of a neighborhood street

“Hot Load” Causes Garbage Fire

Keep Hot Coals OUT of Your Curbside Bin

Summer and BBQs may go hand-in-hand, but hot ash and garbage cans do not! Hot coals from your grill or fire pit should never go into your curbside waste bin.

If the remains are still warm, the rest of the trash can catch fire. When a “hot load” makes it into a garbage truck, waste haulers are required to dump all contents immediately and fire crews have to respond to douse the trash. It can delay pickup times and leave behind an unsightly mark on your neighborhood street.

Hot coals in a curbside waste bin recently forced a hauler to empty his entire load on a Coon Rapids street.

Always allow used charcoal and ash to cool for at least one week before disposal and then place in a non-combustible container (like a coffee can or aluminum foil) before going in the garbage bin.

Final Curbside Textile Pickup in July

The final weeks of Simple Recycling are here. The pickup service, which collects textiles and household goods at your curb, will end in Coon Rapids on July 3.

While the free program collects about 4,500 pounds of recyclables through orange curbside bags each month in Coon Rapids, the amount falls short of Simple Recycling’s goal.

But you CAN still recycle textiles! Bring clothing, shoes and other items to the Coon Rapids Recycling Center. A complete list of accepted items is on the city website.

Another great option is to donate household goods at local thrift stores.
